We tend to think of detoxing by doing a week of green juices or cutting out processed food, however detoxing our skin can be just as important as looking at what we eat.  A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked into the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage.(1)  Other studies found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia.

Anxiety is something that can effect anyone during their life time.  It can be triggered by many physical, emotional and environmental factors - all of which will be unique to an individual.  Some people due to their genetics, experiences/nutrition in utero or in early childhood, or environmental toxicity, may become increasingly sensitized to stress, and find it hard to regulate emotions in every day situations.  For some individuals this can lead to a range of symptoms from panic attacks, digestive issues, chronic pain, insomnia or chronic fatigue.

This is one of my week night go to meals as I can make a huge batch and freeze it up in portions.  Whilst this tastes amazing on nachos, loaded with cheese, sour cream & guacamole or with a size of rice, sticking to my current Paleo challenge for January has meant I just enjoyed it by its self with a chopped avocado.  

I try to avoid stock cubes as many of them have gluten, yeast and a whole host of E Numbers, so to make this Chilli nice and rich i add a little coco powder, which really brings out the flavor of the beef and tomato.

 During the winter we get so many amazing variations of Squash available in the Supermarket.  My all time favorite is Butternut as I find it so versatile.  I add it to pancakes, curries, soups and of course roasted as a side dish it tastes great especially with my home roasted ham or a grass fed steak.  It is naturally high in B Vitamins, Beta Carotene and other carotenoids such as lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin which can be protective against some cancers, protective for the skin and eyes.

These paleo brownies are a firm favourite in our house and are ideal for school lunch boxes as they are also nut free.  For this batch I have used the doTERRA Wild Orange Oil.  Not only does it taste amazing it also works on your emotional state to make you feel calm and uplifted (I will keep telling myself that as I have another one!!).  These brownies are very quick to make and I have yet to find anyone that can guess they are grain and dairy free.

This is a great recipe with a hidden ingredient (shhhh don't tell the kids it has avocado in it!).  It is low in refined sugar and really creamy.  We used an ice cream maker, but you could ude just a dish and your freezer as long as you remembered to stir it regularly.  It does need to be taken out of the fridge a while before serving if it has frozen through completely.  I used the lovely doTERRA Peppermint Oil, which has an amazing flavour and aroma.

With the winter weather, there is nothing better than a bowl of hot soup.  I love chicken soup as it has so many healing properties for the body, and it is a great way to make the most of your chicken after the Sunday roast. Plus, soups are a great way to sneak in more vegetables in a tasty way. 

This recipe includes spices like Turmeric which is an amazing anti-inflammatory spice, and Cayenne Pepper which is warming to the body, helps digestion by stimulating salivary glands and improves detoxification by helping to dilate capillaries increasing blood flow.

I know we all start the new year with resolutions and this year is no different for us here, in wanting to include more vegetables in our diet and especially the diet of the children.  My old juicer gave up earlier last year after at least 7yrs of service.  I have always preferred a masticating juicer so you can get the benefit from greens like kale, spinach and mint.  Juicing is a great way to increase the natural vitamins and minerals we have in our diet in a easy way.

Home Remedies Part 5 - Homemade Cough Syrup!

Its definitely cough and cold season and whilst we generally fair quite well, my children have a dry cough they are struggling to shake.  I made this recipe to help soothe their throats and also to allow the essential oils to support their healing. 

Elderberries have high levels of Vitamin C and antioxidants to boost your cells defenses. I picked a ton in the autumn and put them in the freezer, but you could also substitute black cherries (frozen) which are also good for coughs.

Chicken Fajita Salad - GAPs & Paleo Friendly, Grain Free.

I adore fajitas and they are one of the things I miss the most.  I am working on a good tortilla recipe, but in the interim I've found that I equally enjoy fajias with either a lettuce wrap or like this as a hot salad.  Despite having lots of parts to it, this recipe is fairly quick and easy to make and my whole family enjoy it. 

Fajita Mix

Serves 4


  • 1tsp dried chilli flakes
  • 1 - 2 cloves of crushed garlic
  • 1 tbsp. of fresh oregano or 1 tsp of dried oragano
  • juice of 1/2 a lime
