4 Handbag Remedies to Help with Anxiety

Anxiety is something that can effect anyone during their life time.  It can be triggered by many physical, emotional and environmental factors - all of which will be unique to an individual.  Some people due to their genetics, experiences/nutrition in utero or in early childhood, or environmental toxicity, may become increasingly sensitized to stress, and find it hard to regulate emotions in every day situations.  For some individuals this can lead to a range of symptoms from panic attacks, digestive issues, chronic pain, insomnia or chronic fatigue.

Homemade Elderberry, Lemon & Honey Cough Syrup

Home Remedies Part 5 - Homemade Cough Syrup!

Its definitely cough and cold season and whilst we generally fair quite well, my children have a dry cough they are struggling to shake.  I made this recipe to help soothe their throats and also to allow the essential oils to support their healing.

Elderberries have high levels of Vitamin C and antioxidants to boost your cells defenses. I picked a ton in the autumn and put them in the freezer, but you could also substitute black cherries (frozen) which are also good for coughs.

Home Remedies Part 4 - Garlic for Heart Disease and Immune System

Garlic is an important medicinal herb that is readily available everywhere.  It is one of the safest herbs, and as such can be taken often.  Garlic does indeed have scientifically-proven medicinal properties.  It contains a substance called Allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties that are equivalent to a weak penicillin.

Garlic appears to have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties as well as being high in vitamin C and boosting the immune system.  The list is long when it comes to its uses as a remedy.

Home Remedies Part 3 - Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is a must on a home medicine cabinet.  It is renouned for its anti fungal properties and has been used for centuries to support effective digestion.  It can be taken prior to eating to stimulate hydrochloric acid production or taken as a warm drink with some honey as a remedy for common colds.

The apple cider vinegar that contains all of the health benefits is not a clear vinegar, but just the opposite. It is an organic and unfiltered vinegar.Hippocrates, used this vinegar around 400B.

Home Remedies Part 2 - Aloe Vera for Skin and Bowel Health

Aloe Vera has many uses medicinally that date back hundreds of years.  It is most commonly used in skin preparations, from shampoo, deodorants, toothpaste to after sun.  Most commonly available in gel or liquid form, it can also be ingested and can be useful to help heal oral and gastrointestinal problems.  Gel can be used directly from the leaves if the plant is home grown.

Common conditions that Aloe Vera can help are:

  • Eczema - gel applied onto the skin
  • Sun burn - gel applied to the skin

Home Remedies Part 1 - Castor Oil Packing for Pain Relief

Castor oil has a long history of traditional medical use dating back to ancient Egypt. Derived from the castor bean (Ricinus communis), the oil was once used internally as a laxative but is now primarily used externally due to its potential toxicity.   Castor oil packs are used on the skin to increase circulation and to promote elimination and healing of the tissues and organs underneath the skin. They are also used to stimulate the liver, relieve pain, increase lymphatic circulation, reduce inflammation, and improve digestion.
